چکیده

It has been found that using a segmented grinding wheel with a fluid chamber can significantly minimise the quantity of coolant while improving the ground surface integrity. The present investigation aims to explore the fluid flow mechanism in such a wheel system. To this end, the Weber theory for Newtonian jet instability was applied to quantitatively determine the contribution of coolant flow rate to mist and ligament modes. A semi-analytical model was then developed to predict the mist flow rate by taking into account both the grinding parameters and fluid properties. It was shown that the model prediction was in good agreement with experimental measurements. Because of the comprehensive integration of variables in the formulation, the model provides a good fundamental understanding of the mist formation and offers a practical guideline for the selection and use coolant in minimising the mist flow rate. # 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The coolant penetration in grinding with a segmented wheel—Part 2: Quantitative analysis

This paper develops a quantitative model to predict the power of coolant penetration into the grinding zone of a segmented wheel. The model accounts for the coolant properties and system design characteristics governing the penetration mechanism revealed by the theory established in Part 1 of this series study. By coupling with the author’s previous mist formation analysis, the model offers a q...

An assessment of the applicability of cold air and oil mist in surface grinding

This paper discusses the application of an eco-grinding system using a mixture of compressed cold air and vegetable oil. The feasibility of the system was assessed using the surface grinding of plain carbon steel 1045 with a BWA60MVA1 wheel. The investigation showed that cold air can be used to suppress surface burning under certain material removal rates and has an advantage of reduced grindin...

The coolant penetration in grinding with segmented wheels—part 1: mechanism and comparison with conventional wheels

This paper aims to study the mechanism of coolant penetration into a wheel-work contact zone when a segmented or conventional wheel is used in surface grinding. Based on the principles of fluid motion and considerations of spin-off and splash, analytical models for both conventional and segmented wheels were developed for predicting the power of pumping coolant into the contact zone. It was rev...

Study on Experimental and Modeling of Rotary Roll Dressing of Grinding Wheels

Two of the important parameters in grinding operation are surface roughness of the workpiece and the amount of consumed energy. These parameters are strongly affected by the condition of grinding wheel surface which is dependent on the dressing parameters. Predicting the roughness of the grinding wheel surface after dressing with known dressing parameters can improve the grinding process. Resea...

Experimental Investigation of the Surface Roughness in Grinding of BK7 Optical Glass in Brittle Mode

Surface roughness is a significant parameter which determines the efficiency of optical components. Surface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. It is meaningful to rapid evaluate the surface roughness through the measurement of different grinding parameters. In this study, a cup diamond wheel (D64) is used in grinding pr...
